French mother confesses to killing five babies

Image
PARIS: A French mother was charged Thursday with murdering five of her babies in a case solved by DNA evidence obtained years later after a brawl between neighbours. Fourteen years after the bodies of four of the babies were found in a forest, Sylvie H., aged 53, has admitted to murdering five children, the public prosecutor in the eastern city of Mulhouse told a press conference. The killings are believed to have taken place from 1993-1995 and 2003-2005. The body of a fifth baby was found at the suspect’s home. The mother, who has three other children aged 18, 27 and 32, revealed this week that she gave birth alone at home each time, without the father’s knowledge. Investigators had for years puzzled over who was behind the infants’ deaths. An autopsy showed at least two were strangled with cords. But with no DNA evidence linking the babies to a parent, the case went cold until September 2016 when Sylvie H., her partner and her eldest son were involved in a fight with their nei...

Teachers ‘forced’ 88 female students to strip as punishment in Indian school

About 88 female students of a school in Arunachal Pradesh were forced to undress as punishment by their teachers, reported Hindustan Times . The piece of paper was discovered by the teachers, who then asked the students who was responsible for writing it. When no student was forthcoming, the teachers made all students undress in front of other students. According to the police, the students from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Tani Happa (New Sagalee) in Papum Pare district were subjected to the humiliating treatment on November 23. The issue came into light after the students approached the All Sagalee Students Union (ASSU), later a case was also registered. Police confirmed that an FIR has been filed, adding that the case has been forwarded to the women police station. “The officer in-charge of the (women) police station...

PSO partially suspends fuel supply to Pakistan International

Image
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan State Oil partially suspended fuel supply to the national flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines on Thursday. A source within PSO informed Geo News that despite promises, payments were not being received from PIA, adding that supply was not completely stopped to ensure that passengers do not face difficulties. According to reports, PIA's debt with the Pakistan State Oil is increased by Rs 35 million per day, with total outstanding payments hovering around Rs 16 billion.  The problem of defaulting on payments stems back many years. In January, PSO had suspended fuel supply to PIA over the same issue, while in October 2016 PSO had complained that - after suspending supply - that PIA was paying Shell International Company in advance for fuel it was going to consume but when it came to PSO the attitude was different.  from GEO TV - Pakistan http://ift.tt/2iqo5TP via IFTTT

Trump 'wrong' to retweet anti-Muslim videos: Downing Street

Image
LONDON: US President Donald Trump was "wrong" to retweet three anti-Muslim videos posted by the deputy head of British far-right group Britain First, Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said on Wednesday. "Britain First seeks to divide communities through their use of hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions. They cause anxiety to law-abiding people," he said. "British people overwhelmingly reject the prejudiced rhetoric of the far right, which is the antithesis of the values that this country represents — decency, tolerance and respect. It is wrong for the president to have done this." Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour party, had tweeted earlier: "I hope our government will condemn far-right retweets by Donald Trump. They are abhorrent, dangerous and a threat to our society." from GEO TV - World http://ift.tt/2juWDkq

Think-tank says Saudi-Israel relations growing publicly

Image
LONDON: A security think tank has said that Israel and Saudi Arabia have put aside their differences to become friends and allies – openly. The Royal United Services Studies Institute (RUSI) said in a report on the Gulf Region, Israel, Middle East and North Africa that Israel and Iran have come friends “due to a fear of Iran's nuclear ambitions and its actions in the region”. It said that there’s “almost open bromance between Israel and Saudi Arabia, brought together by their joint hostility towards Iran” The report mentioned that this month that Israel Defence Force Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gadi Eisenkot gave an unprecedented interview with Saudi newspaper Elaf, in which he described Iran as a threat to the region. The Isreali minister announced that Israel would be prepared to share intelligence with “moderate” Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia, to “deal with” Tehran. “We are prepared to share information if it is necessary. There are many mutual interests between th...

Court blocks Uber ride-sharing in Israel

Image
JERUSALEM: A court blocked Uber's ride-sharing services in Israel on Monday in a victory for the country´s traditional taxi operators, saying the US firm´s private drivers lacked proper insurance. The Tel Aviv district court judge's injunction ordering the services to stop from Wednesday came after a court challenge from a taxi drivers' union and a separate ride-hailing app. "They operate private taxis in violation of the law," said Yehuda Bar On, head of the taxi drivers' union. "They put passengers in danger because they don't have insurance. They take drivers who have not had training and official tests." Uber did not immediately respond to the ruling. The US firm has become a global phenomenon operating in more than 600 cities and dozens of countries, but it has faced a series of scandals and legal challenges. Last week, Uber said hackers compromised personal data from some 57 million riders and drivers in a breach kept hidden for a ye...

Karachi honour killing: Court rejects police report declaring suspects innocent

Image
KARACHI: The court on Monday rejected the police report that declared four suspects innocent for electrocuting a teenage couple to death.  Earlier in September, a teenage couple accused of violating the Pashtun ‘code of honour’ was also killed reportedly by being given electric shocks. The murders were executed by family members on the orders of a jirga of elders of the Mohmand tribe. The area where this atrocity played out was Ali Brohi Goth, a locality in the suburbs of Karachi that falls with the jurisdiction of the Ibrahim Hyderi police. As per information garnered from locals and police sources, the wheels of tribal ‘justice’ were set in motion on August 14, the day the country celebrated 70 years of its existence. The woman, 15-year-old Bakht Taj, daughter of Hikmat Khan, had allegedly attempted to elope with 17-year-old Rehman, son of Muhammad Afzal. Both families belong to the Safi sub-clan of the Mohmand tribe and reside in Ali Brohi Goth. On Independence Day, Taj di...

PEMRA orders restoration of news channels

PEMRA orders restoration of news channels

Image
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Sunday ordered the restoration of all news channels. PEMRA on Saturday had ordered to take all news channels off air. Prior to this decision, PEMRA had directed news channels to ensure the security of their staff while the situation persisted; in light of which, Geo News as per its tradition of responsible reporting was and continues to abide by the rules. Earlier, PEMRA had barred media from live coverage of Islamabad operation under Media Code of Conduct 2015. In a press release, the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) had strongly condemned the unilateral closure of news channels by the government. The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) also expressed concern over the sudden closure of television channels and their transmission. from GEO TV - Pakistan http://ift.tt/2jnaqJK via IFTTT

Over 150 schoolchildren stranded at Gujranwala railway station

Image
GUJRANWALA: More than 150 schoolchildren en route to Lahore from Abbottabad are stranded at a railway station in Gujranwala as the train track has been closed owing to countrywide protest against the Faizabad operation. According to the schoolchildren and their teachers, their mobile phone batteries have died due to which they cannot contact their families. The stranded people have also run out of money to buy food. The girls and boys — of grades between one and 10 — and teachers are from a private school in Lahore, who had gone for a trip to Abbottabad. They were on their way to Lahore today when their train was stopped in Gujranwala around noon due to protest on the railway track in Shahdara. The protest has led to suspension of train service between Rawalpindi and Lahore. The same train, in which the schoolchildren and teachers are stranded, has three grooms along with families, who were supposed to reach their respective destinations for their weddings. However, the railway a...
