Fresh protests over economy in Iran, say officials

Image
TEHRAN: Iranian officials reported fresh protests over the struggling economy on Friday, a day after dozens were arrested in second city Mashhad. First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri suggested hardline opponents of the government may be behind the demonstrations, which spread to Tehran and the city of Kermanshah in western Iran on Friday, though numbers reportedly remained small. "Some incidents in the country these days are on the pretext of economic problems, but it seems there is something else behind them," Jahangiri said in comments carried by state broadcaster IRIB . "They think by doing this they harm the government," he said, but "it will be others who ride the wave". Tehran’s deputy provincial governor Mohsen Hamedani said "less than 50 people" had gathered in one of the city’s squares and several had been arrested after refusing to move on, according to the reformist newspaper Etamad. He said they were "under the influence of...

Saudi-led air raids kill 68 Yemen civilians in one day: UN

Image
SANAA: Sixty-eight Yemeni civilians were killed in two separate air raids by the Saudi-led Arab coalition in one day, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Jamie McGoldrick said on Thursday. The first air strike on Tuesday hit a "crowded popular market" in Taez province, killing 54 civilians including eight children, and wounding 32 others, he said in a statement. The second raid was in the Red Sea province of Hodeida and killed 14 people from the same family, the statement said. "I remain deeply disturbed by mounting civilian casualties caused by escalated and indiscriminate attacks throughout Yemen," McGoldrick said. In addition to the casualties from Tuesday´s two air raids, another 41 civilians were killed and 43 wounded over the previous 10 days of fighting, he said. The Arab coalition intensified its air campaign targeting the Huthi rebels after December 19 when Saudi air defences intercepted a ballistic missile the insurgents fired at the Saudi capit...

Russia loses contact with Angolan satellite: space industry source

Image
MOSCOW: Russia has lost contact with Angola’s first national telecoms satellite launched from the Baikonur space pad, a source in the space industry told AFP on Wednesday. The incident involving the Russian-made Angosat-1 is a new embarrassment for the country’s once proud space industry after Russia in November lost contact with a weather satellite after it was launched from a new cosmodrome in the country’s far east. "Contact has temporarily been lost," the source told AFP, adding specialists were now looking into the matter. The source said officials had stopped receiving "telemetry data" but called it a "rather common situation" and expressed the hope that contact would be re-established. The reason for the loss of contact was not immediately clear. Earlier Wednesday the Russian space agency Roscosmos said that the satellite had been successfully launched and reached orbit. The Zenit-2SB rocket carrying Angosat to orbit was supplied by Ukrainian...

US sanctions two North Korean officials over missile program

Image
WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday announced sanctions on two North Korean officials for their roles in developing the country’s ballistic missiles, the latest step in a campaign to press Pyongyang to give up its nuclear and missile programs. The US Treasury named the officials as Kim Jong Sik and Ri Pyong Chol. It said Kim was reportedly a key figure in North Korea’s efforts to switch its missile program from liquid to solid fuel, while Ri was reported to be a key official involved in the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) development. ”Treasury is targeting leaders of North Korea’s ballistic missile programs, as part of our maximum pressure campaign to isolate (North Korea) and achieve a fully denuclearized Korean Peninsula,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. “These actions follow Friday’s United Nations Security Council Resolution, which imposed strong new sanctions on North Korea further shutting down its ability to raise illicit fund...
