LAHORE: Having served out his one-month sentence for a speech he made as a Senator, Nehal Hashmi was released from Adiala Jail (Central Jail Rawalpindi) on Wednesday. A visibly charged Hashmi said he had been made a victim of revenge for standing by Nawaz Sharif. He added that his life and livelihood were in the hands of the Almighty, not in the hands of the conspirators. Hashmi who was disqualified from holding public office for a period of five years by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for threatening then prime minister Nawaz Sharif's unidentified 'enemies', said he was had been victimized. "My appeal was filed the very next day after my sentencing, but one month has passed and my appeal has not been heard," Hashmi told journalists, adding, "See, if justice has prevailed or victimisation has prevailed." Hashmi asked those gathered around him, "Whom did I say anything against? When did I take the name of the judiciary? When did I take the na...

Doctors issued guidelines on how to treat in-flight medical emergencies after study finds rise in passengers falling ill at 36,000 feet The University of Toronto has issued a guide for medical professionals on how to manage in-flight medical emergencies and treat patients at over 30,000 feet in the air. Published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) the study outlines the steps to follow after the captain puts out a call asking for doctors on board to help with a medical emergency. NEW YORK: After researching digital currencies for work last year, personal finance writer JR Duren hopped on his own crypto-rollercoaster. Duren bought $5 worth of litecoin in November, and eventually purchased $400 more, mostly with his credit card. In just a few months, he experienced a rally, a crash and a recovery, with the adrenaline highs and lows that come along. “At first, I was freaking out,” Duren said about watching his portfolio plunge 40 percent at one point. “The precipitous drop came as a shock.” The 39-year-old Floridian is part of the new class of crypto-investors who do not necessarily think bitcoin will replace the U.S. dollar, or that blockchain will revolutionize modern finance or that dentists should have their own currency. Dubbed by longtime crypto-investors as “the noobs”– online lingo for “newbies” – they are ordinary investors hopping onto the latest trend, often with little understanding of how cryptocurrencies work or why they exist. “There has been ...

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday delivered its verdict against the suspension of mobile phone services across the country under the pretext of security. Multiple petitions had been submitted against the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the case was decided last year in September by Justice Ather Minallah, but the judgement was reserved to be delivered at a later date. The verdict which was read out in open court declared that, "the actions, orders and directives issued by the Federal Government or the Authority, as the case may be, which are inconsistent with the provisions of section 54(3) are declared as illegal, ultra vires and without lawful authority and jurisdiction." Petitioners had moved the court terming the suspension of mobile phone and internet services as a violation of their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan. CPR survival rates are lower than most people think

The majority of people believe cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is successful more often than it tends to be in reality, according to a small U.S. study. This overly optimistic view, which may partly stem from seeing happy outcomes in television medical dramas, can get in the way of decision-making and frank conversations about end of life care with doctors, the research team writes in American Journal of Emergency Medicine. CPR is intended to restart a heart that has stopped beating, known as cardiac arrest, which is typically caused by an electrical disturbance in the heart muscle. Although a heart attack is not the same thing – it occurs when blood flow to the heart is partly or completely blocked, often by a clot – a heart attack can also cause the heart to stop beating. Whatever the cause of cardiac arrest, restarting the heart as quickly as possible to get blood flowing to the brain is essential to preventing permanent brain damage. More often than not, cardiac arrest ends...
Apple moves to store iCloud keys in China, raising human rights fears

SAN FRANCISCO/BEIJING: When Apple Inc begins hosting Chinese users’ iCloud accounts in a new Chinese data centre at the end of this month to comply with new laws there, Chinese authorities will have far easier access to text messages, email and other data stored in the cloud. That’s because of a change to how the company handles the cryptographic keys needed to unlock an iCloud account. Until now, such keys have always been stored in the United States, meaning that any government or law enforcement authority seeking access to a Chinese iCloud account needed to go through the U.S. legal system. Now, according to Apple, for the first time the company will store the keys for Chinese iCloud accounts in China itself. That means Chinese authorities will no longer have to use the U.S. courts to seek information on iCloud users and can instead use their own legal system to ask Apple to hand over iCloud data for Chinese users, legal experts said. Human rights activists say they fear the aut...

MOSCOW: Russia’s diplomatic mail was not used for cocaine traffic in Argentina, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Saturday, after police busted an international ring of drug smugglers. The investigation started in 2016, when the Russian ambassador to Argentina called local authorities to report that traffickers were trying to move 16 bags of cocaine from the Buenos Aires embassy by way of a diplomatic flight. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, said on social media that the information about smugglers using diplomatic mail “was not true”. The investigation led to the arrest on Wednesday of an Argentine policeman and another citizen of the South American country. Others involved in the scheme had been arrested in Russia, while one of the leaders of the plot was still on the run, Argentina’s Security Minister Patricia Bullrich told reporters earlier this week. Zakharova said the cocaine was destined for Europe and belonged to a Russian embassy’s ...

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has issued a show cause notice to Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for making “unwarranted comments about some important constitutional institutions” while passing an interim order in the Faizabad sit-in case. “You knowing and purposely while adjudicating upon Writ Petition No. 3914 of 2017 made unnecessary and unwarranted comments about some important constitutional institutions,” says the notice issued under an order passed by the SJC. The SJC has required submission of Justice Siddiqui’s response within 14 days, so that it is placed before the Council to proceed further on March 7, 2018, sources informed The News on Friday. In an obvious reference to the remarks of Justice Siddiqui concerning the role of certain senior officers of the armed forces in negotiating an end to the Faizabad dharna by Tehreek-e-Labbaik in November 2017, it is observed in the show cause notice: “Such comments had prima facie tr...

BRUSSELS: International donors have raised half a billion dollars for a multi-national military operation in West Africa’s Sahel region, the EU’s top diplomat said on Friday, as Europe seeks to stop migrants and militants reaching its shores. At a conference of about 50 countries including the United States, Japan and Norway, countries pledged 414 million euros ($509 million) for the G5 Sahel force, made up of troops from Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. The European Union, which believes training local forces will avoid risking the lives of its own combat troops, was one of the biggest donors, doubling its contribution to 116 million euros. It paves the way to make the force fully operational later this year. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini stressed that promises had to be followed through on quickly to reach troops, while African leaders said the money so far would only cover the first year of operations. ISLAMABAD/PARIS: Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and Pakistan's Foreign Office on Friday denied rumours regarding Pakistan being included in the grey-list. The FATF spokesperson stated that a final decision will come after the meeting reviewing the matter has concluded. The meeting is currently underway. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson told Geo News that a request to include Pakistan in the grey-list was made earlier in January by the United States and Britain. The reservations tabled before the FATF are those of America, the spokesperson added. He specified that Pakistan has already taken action against most of the reservations, including implementing its own national action plan (NAP). The FO spokesperson further added that reported from the FATF and the International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG) are still awaited. Earlier in the day, Indian media had misreported that a decision regarding including Pakistan in the grey-list had b...
