Trump says ‘no’ to Taliban talks after wave of attacks

Image
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump ruled out on Monday quick talks with the Taliban, following a wave of bloody large-scale attacks in the Afghan capital, Kabul. “I don’t think we are prepared to talk right now,” Trump said, throwing into question Washington’s strategy of pushing the group towards the negotiating table. “We don’t want to talk with the Taliban,” Trump said. “They are killing people left and right, innocent people.” He added: “There may be a time but it’s going to be a long time.” On Monday, Kabul suffered its third major assault in recent days, as the Taliban and Daesh escalate their offensives. The militants have stepped up their attacks on beleaguered Afghan troops and police in recent months, sapping morale already hit by desertions and corruption. A suicide attack on an Afghan army battalion Monday killed at least 11 soldiers and wounded 16, a defense ministry spokesperson said. Last Saturday a Taliban suicide attacker driving an explosives-packed ambulan...

Imran Khan should stop dreaming about PM’s Office: Muqam

Image
NOWSHERA: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairperson Imran Khan should stop dreaming about having a place in Prime Minister’s Office, said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Amir Muqam. While addressing party workers in Nowshera Monday, Muqam said Imran should keep the new sherwani that he got stitched for his wedding only, implying that latter would never be able to take oath as the prime minister. Speaking about Imran backtracking on his statements, Muqam said it seemed like the PTI chief has bagged degrees in taking U-turns. “If someone wants to get educated on taking U-turns they should get admission in Bani Gala.” During his speech, Muqam, who is also an adviser to the PM, lauded the Punjab police saying they worked day and night to arrest the person involved in raping and murdering minors in Kasur district of the province. However, the PM’s adviser said, Imran, whose party is in power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has forgotten the case of Sharifa Bibi. Muqam said...

Gunmen attack Kabul military academy: security sources

Image
KABUL: Gunmen launched a pre-dawn attack on a military academy in Kabul on Monday, security officials and sources told AFP, in an ongoing assault that marks the latest violence to strike the Afghan capital. Some of the attackers at the Marshal Fahim Military Academy have been killed, an Afghan security source said, adding the gunmen had not managed to enter the academy. Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid told AFP there had been rocket and gunfire but now "it is calm". Witnesses told AFP they heard several explosions and gunfire at around 5am (0030 GMT) at the academy on the outskirts of Kabul where high-ranking military officers are trained. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the raid, which comes days after a Taliban suicide attacker driving an explosives-packed ambulance blew up in a crowded area of the city, killing and wounding hundreds.  The blasts occurred days after an ambulance bomb in the center of Kabul killed more than 100 people and just ov...

According to witness reports, Karla Garrufe, 21, died on Thursday morning after being gunned down by a man whose car she had bumped into from behind, said Miguel Angel Guerrero, a spokesman for prosecutors in Tijuana.
